3.9 Upgrade Announcements

Aug. 6 - Transition complete

The transition to Moodle 3.9 is now complete, bringing nearly two years of research, planning, and development to a close. The Office of Distance Learning will continue offering training on new Moodle features on an ongoing basis through its webinar series. Find recordings and register for upcoming sessions through the Webinar Portal

Non-academic courses

Non-academic courses and old course data are now accessible at Access courses by logging in with your ULID and password.

Academic courses

Academic courses taught since Fall 2020, as well as Fall 2021 course shells, are now accessible in Moodle 3.9 at Log in with your ULID and password as you normally would.

If you would like a course taught prior to Fall 2020 migrated, submit a ticket to the IT Service Desk.

Moodle-integrated tools

EduTools and external tools, like McGraw Hill Connect, are in the process of being enabled. Each will become available in the Activity Chooser once they are validated.

Resolving ‘Incomplete’ Grades

Faculty will need to work in to resolve any incomplete grades from prior semesters.

July 27

Moodle unavailable through Aug. 6 for upgrade
The University is transitioning Moodle 3.9 courses for Fall 2021 from the temporary site to Non-academic courses and old course data will be maintained at Faculty and staff members will not have access to courses through Friday, Aug. 6.

July 15

Faculty can now access courses taught Fall 2020 through Spring 2021 and course shells for Fall 2021 at this website.   

If you have trouble logging in, or can't find your course, contact the IT Service Desk.

Moodle 3.9 has several features that provide smoother functionality than Moodle 3.1, including an improved dashboard, navigation, and forum upgrades. 

The New Features section of the website includes a video demo and outline of features to watch in Moodle 3.9.

The upgrade for the University’s Learning Management System from Moodle 3.1 to Moodle 3.9 will begin this summer. The goal is for all courses to be in the updated system by Fall 2021. 

What this means for your courses
You should continue to access your courses as normal. You will receive information over the summer regarding how you will access your courses in the upgraded system.

What to expect from Moodle 3.9
Moodle 3.9 will have benefits for instructors and students. Faculty members who participated in pilot programs in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters identified several highlights, including:

  • Improved navigation; 
  • Improved Dashboard view; 
  • Accordion-style collapsible modules for less clutter and minimal scrolling;
  • Advanced grading options for discussion forums, including grading rubrics;
  • Clear labeling of due dates for quizzes and assignments; 
  • Clear labeling of hidden items;
  • Auto-linking of text;
  • Native integration of H5P (for designing interactive content and activities); 
  • Embedded user tours; and 
  • Improved compatibility with external plug-ins and tools.

Faculty will also have access to new, robust training materials to get the most from the system. 

What’s next?
The Office of Distance Learning will continue to keep faculty informed as to the progress of the update. Information is forthcoming regarding accessing courses and Moodle 3.9 resources.
