50th Course Certification: A conversation with Instructor Bob Garrie
Thu, 12/12/2024 - 10:25amDuring Fall 2024, the Office of Distance Learning celebrated its 50th Quality Matters course certification. The distinction belongs to HSA 306: Trends in Health Care, designed and taught by Instructor Robert “Bob” Garrie, Department of Health Sciences. The course is the third Bob has worked to certify, and we asked him to reflect on the certification process.
ODL: Why was it important to you to complete the QM Course Review Process?
Bob: It provides a great framework for evaluating and improving the design of my online courses and affords alignment with best practices for online education. For my students, having a QM-certified course helps them better understand what is expected and how they will be evaluated. For the B.S. in Health Services Administration degree program, QM course certification provides a systematic way to ensure the quality of our online courses. Not only does it help to maintain consistency and high standards across all the HSA courses, but it enhances the reputation of the program in attracting more students.
ODL: What motivates you to keep having your courses reviewed?
Bob: The key motivation is my commitment to continuous quality improvement. By identifying and addressing those areas of potential improvement according to the QM standards, I am able to provide high-quality learning experiences for my students that are engaging, effective, and accessible.
ODL: What advice do you have for those who are considering putting a course through the review process?
Bob: First, familiarize yourself with the QM Rubric to identify areas where your course already aligns and areas that may need attention. Next, be objective. Seriously evaluate your course and ask yourself, “How can I improve this Module? This Assignment?” Take it one module at a time. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to colleagues who have gone through the process as well as the Instructional Designers in the Office of Distance Learning. They have a wealth of knowledge and offer great suggestions.
ODL: Your most recent course holds the distinction of being the university’s 50th certified course. What does that distinction mean to you?
Bob: I am truly honored to have this distinction. This achievement motivates me to continue enhancing areas in all my courses and encourages me to explore new ways to enhance the learning experience for my students. Being the instructor for the 50th certified course highlights the university's dedication to providing high-quality online learning experiences. It's fulfilling to be a part of this broader institutional effort and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
