Faculty using Panopto to record and post lectures in Moodle for their hybrid and online courses will have access to the service for another two academic years through June 30, 2016. According to Dr. Luke Dowden, Director of Distance Learning, the current use case is strong and has been growing with the integration of Panopto into Moodle. “Faculty can record videos, edit them, and sync them to one or more courses in Moodle, the University’s learning management system. Within each course, faculty can see which students are viewing individual videos and for how long.” Student viewing data of faculty created videos will help faculty understand the appropriate lengths and how to position this learning material in their courses for maximum benefit. “One of our goals is to provide a set of instructional technology within Moodle to faculty designing and teaching online courses that is easy to use and integrated,” stated Carey Hamburg, eLearning Media Specialist in the Office of Distance Learning.

The latest research on social presence theory applied to the online classroom indicates that asynchronous videos posted by the instructor may increase students perception of an instructor as “real” and “there” according to Patrick Lowenthal, an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology at Boise State University. Yet, Lowenthal acknowledges that more study is needed with larger sample sizes to confirm his early findings. You can view his recent presentation slides on “Does Video Improve Social Presence?” at this link - http://www.slideshare.net/plowenthal/sloan-c-emerging-technologies-conference-social-presence-and-online-video.
